OKLAHOMA CITY – Former Warriors goaltender Cameron Korpi has been named on the 2023 Philadelphia Flyers Development Camp roster.
“I was watching the draft, and seeing if my buddies were going,” said Korpi. “Right after, the Flyers called me and asked if anyone had been in touch yet about dev camp. The next thing I know it was ‘awesome- we’ll see you tomorrow,’ and they booked me a flight. Now I’m sitting in a hotel room. I was at a loss for words. I had to ask myself if it was real.”
Korpi, 19, started the 2022-23 season with the Warriors, and earned a 12-3 record with a .923 SV%, 1.97 GAA, and 1 shutout before joining the USHL’s Tri-City Storm.
“There are so many good people around me, and I have such a good support group with my family, coaches and everyone else,” said Korpi. “Coach Roth gave me a chance to play at the beginning of the season, and now looking back at everything I’ve been able to do- it’s all because he gave me a shot. I can’t thank Roth, the Warriors, and also the Tri-City staff enough for trusting me and giving me that chance. Tri-City promised me a lot of things, and when I got there, they honestly gave me more.”
Korpi appeared in 21 regular season games for the Storm and led his squad into the postseason with a 13-4-3 record. Down the stretch, he had a .911 SV% and 2.52 GAA and earned 1 shutout.
“It’s all about an opportunity and confidence,” said Korpi. “As a goalie, games are so important, especially when you’re moving up. When you play, you get a chance to learn what works and what you need to practice for the next game. Coaching is obviously a big part of it, but getting that chance to self-evaluate is especially important.”
The South Lyon, Michigan, product is committed to play Division-I hockey for the Western Michigan University Broncos.
The Philadelphia Flyers Development Camp will go from July 2 to July 6, and hosts 39 players. For more details: https://www.nhl.com/flyers/news/flyers-announce-2023-development-camp-roster-and-schedule/c-345154786.
“I’m going to learn from the players and coaches here,” said Korpi. It’s all about seeing what it takes, and seeing what they do to be so good. I’m super excited. I’m going to have fun with it.”
